Nigeria is likely to become world number one open defecation country should India which occupies that position at the moment succeeds in her effort to end the ugly act by October this year

To this end, UNICEF and the nigerian government are stepping up the campaign to create toilets for 47 million citizens who pass feces openly, as well as increase from thirteen the number of open-defecation-free local government areas by 2025

Pa wakoma  is a fisherman, he tells me he has lived in the community for 35 years and has never used a toilet other than the big body of water were he does his fishing activities.


The use of open space and not toilet comes with its attendant health implications


Apart from the excretion or poo in the river, like it is done in this riverine community, statistics shows that 47 million Nigerians use Bush parts, highways, open drainages rocks and open ground as their toilet.


India is the world’s capital for open defecation at the moment. The country has however set a target to end the disgusting act by October 2019, which automatically means Nigeria may just be sliding into that unpleasant position

A Nigerian feces collector, igwe Nicholas says the country’s position is not the problem, but whether government muscle the will to build a stronger public, private collaboration to raise the needed 900 billion naira to meet the 2025 target to end open defecation in Nigeria

As Nigeria counts days on days before October 2019 when,if urgent steps are not taken, she is likely to become the world capital of feces, passionate appeals for action by locals like those in this riverine community may just be the needed push to get the country out of such inglorious position
